If you caught Part 1 of our heat safety series, you already know that heat-related illnesses send thousands of construction workers to the hospital every year. Now let's get into the nitty-gritty of what you can actually do about it. We're talking real-world, field-tested strategies that work when you're sweating buckets at 2 PM on a jobsite in Phoenix.
Hydration: Beyond "Just Drink Water"
Yeah, we all know to drink water. But there's a right way and a wrong way to stay hydrated when you're working construction in the heat.
The 15-20 Minute Rule Don't wait until you're thirsty, that's already too late. Set a timer on your phone or watch for every 15-20 minutes. Take 4-6 ounces of water each time. That's about half a standard water bottle. One supervisor in Texas told us he uses the "sip, don't chug" rule with his crew. "When guys try to make up for lost time by drinking a whole bottle at once, they just end up feeling sick," he says.
Electrolytes Matter (But Skip the Sugar Bombs) After two hours of heavy work in the heat, plain water isn't enough. Your body needs to replace the salt and electrolytes you're sweating out. Sports drinks work, but watch the sugar content, too much can actually slow down absorption. Better options include coconut water, diluted sports drinks (50/50 with water), or electrolyte tablets dropped into your water bottle.

Start Before You Start Here's a pro tip from a foreman in Arizona: "We tell our guys to start hydrating the night before a hot day, not when they show up to work." Pre-hydration gives your body a head start. Drink 16-20 ounces of water 2-3 hours before work starts, then another 8 ounces 15-30 minutes before you clock in.
What to Avoid Coffee, energy drinks, and soda actually work against you. They're diuretics, meaning they make you lose more fluid than you take in. Save the morning coffee for cooler days, or at least balance it with extra water.
Smart Scheduling: Work With the Sun, Not Against It
The difference between a 95°F day and a 110°F day often comes down to timing.
The Golden Hours Start your heavy work before 10 AM and after 3 PM when possible. That middle stretch from 10 AM to 3 PM is when the sun is most brutal. Use that time for lighter tasks, equipment maintenance, or material organization.
One concrete crew in Nevada restructured their entire summer schedule around this concept. "We start pouring at 5 AM now instead of 8 AM," says the crew chief. "It sounds crazy, but finishing a pour before the real heat hits is a game-changer. Our guys are less wiped out, and the concrete cures better too."
Job Rotation That Actually Works Don't leave the same guy on the jackhammer all day. Rotate between high-intensity and low-intensity tasks every 30-60 minutes. Set up your crew so someone's always available to swap in. It's like tag-teaming the heat.
Extended Breaks Aren't Lazy OSHA recommends 15-minute breaks every hour when it's over 95°F. That's not a suggestion, it's smart business. A 15-minute break costs way less than a heat stroke hospitalization or a worker comp claim.

Gear Up: Clothing and Equipment Choices That Matter
What you wear can make or break your day in the heat.
Light Colors, Loose Fit This isn't just an old wives' tale. Light-colored clothing reflects heat instead of absorbing it. Loose-fitting clothes allow air circulation around your body. Tight clothes trap heat and prevent sweat from evaporating, which is how your body naturally cools itself.
Fabric Facts Cotton beats synthetic materials in hot weather. Cotton absorbs sweat and allows it to evaporate, cooling you down. Polyester and other synthetics trap heat and moisture. Yes, cotton takes longer to dry, but that's actually a good thing when you're trying to stay cool.
Head and Neck Protection A wide-brimmed hat or hard hat with a neck shade can drop your body temperature by several degrees. Your head and neck are where a lot of body heat escapes, so protecting them from direct sun makes a huge difference.
Cooling Gear That Actually Works Cooling towels (the kind you soak in water) around your neck can provide relief for 2-3 hours. Cooling vests are worth the investment if you're doing extended work in extreme heat. Some crews have started using portable neck fans: they look a little silly, but they work.
Field-Tested Cooling Hacks
Here are some tricks we've collected from crews across the country:
The Frozen Water Bottle Trick Fill water bottles about 1/3 full and freeze them overnight. Top them off with cold water in the morning. You get ice-cold water for hours, plus the frozen part acts like an ice pack you can put on your neck or wrists during breaks.
Create Shade Where There Isn't Any Portable shade structures, tarps, or even parking a truck strategically can create cooling zones. One electrical crew in Florida sets up a pop-up canopy at every jobsite, no matter how short the job. "It takes five minutes to set up and can save someone's life," the foreman explains.

The Wet Shirt Strategy When it's really bad, soak your shirt with cool water during breaks. The evaporation will cool you down for 20-30 minutes. Keep a spray bottle on hand for quick cool-downs.
Ice Points Apply ice or cold water to pulse points: wrists, neck, temples, and behind the ears. These spots are where blood vessels are close to the skin, so cooling them helps cool your whole body faster.
What Supervisors Need to Do
If you're running a crew, preventing heat illness is part of your job description.
Know the Signs Heat exhaustion looks like heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, and dizziness. Heat stroke is when someone stops sweating, has hot/dry skin, and acts confused or agitated. Heat stroke is a medical emergency: call 911 immediately.
Create a Heat Safety Plan Know what the heat index is going to be each day and adjust accordingly. Have a clear plan for what happens when someone shows signs of heat illness. Make sure everyone knows where the shade, water, and first aid supplies are.
Lead by Example If you're not taking breaks and drinking water, neither will your crew. Make hydration and cooling breaks mandatory, not optional.
Watch for Risk Factors New guys, older workers, anyone on medications, and people who partied too hard the night before are at higher risk. Keep an extra eye on them during hot weather.
The Real Cost of Getting It Wrong
Here's a reality check: heat-related illnesses cost the construction industry over $300 million annually in lost productivity, medical costs, and insurance claims. But more importantly, these are completely preventable injuries.
A sheet metal worker in Las Vegas put it best: "You can push through a lot of things on a jobsite, but you can't push through heat stroke. I've seen tough guys drop like rocks because they thought they could tough it out."
The bottom line? Heat safety isn't about being soft: it's about being smart. Taking these prevention steps seriously keeps your crew working, keeps projects on schedule, and keeps everyone going home safe at the end of the day.
